First year reflective summary
My first year as a student has been such a great experience, it has allowed me to discover a lot more in the art world as well as helping myself to develop as an artist. I have felt that I can explore more ways in working, for example having a wide range of workshops. From the wood workshop, to create 3D objects to the print room, where you can just spend the day doing work.
At the beginning of the year I didn't feel very comfortable in making work that wasn't a 'painting' so experimenting was very difficult and I quickly found myself moving back onto painting. As the year has gone past I feel like, painting a picture isn't really something I do anymore because experimenting different ways of working was a massive step and I would like to carry on experimenting those ways of working.
Throughout the year I found that the Independence in working was difficult to start off with but that has left me feeling independent myself, helping me to make my own work, come up with my own ideas and rely on myself to get work completed, this helped me with pushing out of my comfort zone.
A big thing for me this year is the fact that I was being pushed out of my comfort zone and I found that one of the most difficult thing on this course. Sitting here now at the end of the course I have to say that getting out of my comfort zone by working big, using the space around me has been one of the best developments of this course.
Altogether I feel that this course has pushed me away from my comfort zone and has broadened my knowledge and ideas of what is around me, whether it be the space I'm working in or the materials I use, I feel like sticking to my sketch book or a canvas is something I still want to do.
Another part of the course I found difficult and caught myself struggling but also helped me in becoming a more well knowledged aritst is the critical side of the course as it made me realise I didn't actually know anything about art and it made me question if I was on the right course. Because of this self questioning it encouraged me to learn about art in a way I would have never even thought about, also helping to write my essay.
This year has been a massive step towards becoming a better artist and because of all the challenges I am excited to finish the year knowing how much more I have got to know myself and the way I work and think.
Working really slow is something I struggle with too even if I feel like im working fast, im not and because of this I find it difficult to have a large variety of work by the end of the project, this is something that I will try to work on through summer and the next couple of years.
