Kiefer is a German painter and sculptor, using heavy materials such as lead, straw, ash, clay, shellac and oil paints. His work tells a story back in German history aeound the Nazi time, showing the patterns of life through from life to death and decay. Kiefer considers his materials to be heavy enough to bear the burden of history, the time of the Nazis is such a heavy subject to talk about or even bring up and the materials simbolise this, working like this wasn't very common back then.
Visiting the white cube gallery to see this exhibition was a massive experience for myself because of the feeling you have when walking around. At first entering a dark long room filled with beds and guns made out of Lead, it made me feel as if I was going back into history to the time of all of this happening. The size of his work makes the exhibition feel powerful because his paintings and sculptors over shadow you, perhaps this is the way the people felt living in this time.
Before entering the gallery I didn't have any idea of what it would be like because I had only seen images of his work either in books or on the internet and I would say it was so worth seeing it in person because there are certain things you don't see about the work in images and the feeling is completely different.
Seeing the paintings up close in person, you can see how detailed the paintings really are, they look broken down as if the painting is going to just fall apart anytime soon, this showing the decay and how much Kiefers work shows a really old part of history.
Leaving this exhibition it made me realise that the meaning behind the work is just as important as what the work is showing and the materials Kiefer uses, he picked his materials for a reason not just because he wanted to or because the materials were there, he had a reason to pick these materials.
